Road conditions have improved throughout the day in many parts of the Tennessee Valley. However, law enforcement agencies urge you to use caution because you may encounter slick areas. Please be aware we’re expecting another round of snow tonight that is expected to cause more travel problems Wednesday, possibly into Thursday morning. ***Do NOT call 911 for road conditions.  Please keep the line clear for emergencies.*** Huntsville

Tuesday 3:25 p.m. – All of I-565 and all of Memorial Parkway are currently open. Highway 72 over Chapman Mountain is open. So is Cecil Ashburn Drive, but you’re urged to use caution. Bankhead Pkwy remains closed. Highway 431 over Monte Sano (between Hampton Cove and Huntsville) is open but has several icy spots. Madison Several roads and bridges are icy.  Madison Police say crews have treated as many areas as possible, but say many have slick spots.  Please use extreme caution.  Earlier this morning, these problem spots were reported: -Wall Triana/I 565 overpass and 565 Westbound and Eastbound are very hazardous. Drivers use extreme caution -Zierdt Road/Madison Boulevard – icy -County Line Road at the railroad track -Mill Road/Balch Road -The bridge at Browns Ferry and Balch Road -Balch Road/Gillespie Road| -Madison Boulevard/Hughes Road -Hughes Road at the railroad tracks -Old Madison Pike & Shelton Road -Eastview from Hughes to Slaughter and Wall Triana at Mill Road Madison County Several spots are very icy, including: -Keel Mountain Road is closed -Highway 53 from Burwell to Research Park -Winchester Road in the area of Moores Mill -Highway 72 from Moores Mill to Dug Hill -Capshaw and Nance -All secondary roads in Hazel Green/Meridianville and bridges on Highway 231/431 in Hazel Green/Meridianville Cullman County I-65 near Lacon – traffic having problems getting up the mountain in both directions.  The road is open, but very slow going and stalled near the Highway 278 exit. Most roads are treacherous – there are several wrecks. All roads dangerous, according to the sheriff’s office. Highway 157 and Highway 31 aren’t closed, but slick.  The sheriff’s office urges you not to drive on them unless you absolutely have to. Lawrence County Lawrence County – has some snow on the roads, but so far, okay. Everyone is trying to be careful. Limestone County Police say roads in Athens are very slick, and there were several wrecks on Tuesday morning.  Many cars slid in to ditches.  Police ask that you please stay home until road conditions improve.  Public works is putting sand on bridges, but roads are still very slick. Limestone County has called in all sheriff’s deputies to the jail.  They’re having deputies stay off the roads until it’s safe to drive, unless it’s absolutely necessary. I-65 – there are several wrecks on Interstate 65 north. Morgan County The Interstate 65 bridge is open, and Alabama Dept. of Transportation crews have treated it twice to keep it clear.  The left lane of I-65 is icy in both directions, because most people are using the right lane to drive more slowly. Decatur – 6th Avenue is definitely icy, just off Hudson Bridge (Hwy 31) – bridge is open, but is icy. Highway 36 and Highway 67 are very icy.  There is also icing at the intersection of Highway 36 and Highway 231. The bridge on 231 between Huntsville and Lacey’s Spring is open, but icy.  People are driving on it – please use extreme caution. Brindlee Mountain is open, but slick.  There have been some wrecks and some drivers got stuck. Marshall County All roads in Marshall County are covered in snow. Much of the county has seen 1.5 to 2 inches of snow since 3 a.m. – all roads are slick and treacherous, according to the Marshall County Emergency Management Agency.  The EMA urges you not to travel unless it is an emergency situation.  More snow/sleet is falling, which will continue to make the roads worse. DeKalb County In Fort Payne, Beason Gap Road and Fort Payne Gap are both closed.  Highway 35/Wallace Avenue is open, but slick. Hwy 117 near Mentone is icy and dangerous. Hwy 35 near Powell is icy. Hwy 68 near Crossville & Collinsville is treacherous. County Road 85 – several accidents on this road.  Please stay off the roads unless you absolutely have to. Jackson County There were numerous wrecks Tuesday morning related to the weather.  If you must drive, use extreme caution. A few particular problems to note: Cathedral Caverns Road at Highway 72 – very slick in this area. Hwy 35 at the top of the mountain, at Section – the top is extremely icy. Hwy 40 – near Henagar – same thing  – all roads in the area are treacherous. Shoals Area Highway 101 across Wheeler Dam is closed, according to the Colbert County Sheriff’s Office. Frankford Road in Colbert County, going up the mountain, is dangerous. All bridges are covered in snow and ice and are treacherous. DOT crews are out working to treat as many areas as possible. Franklin County – no word of any road closings or accidents at this time. If you must drive, please use extreme caution.  Here are some safety tips for driving on ice.
